Which plant components

Selecting which 'Planting' components to download

Components are designated either 'garden' or 'planting' components, separating hard landscaping from soft landscaping (plants). Within each category, there are sub-categories to help you locate components quickly. Each component's details have some basic information included, to help you make selections;

Planting Style icons

If you wish to create a bespoke planting design to a particular theme (not using the 'ready-made borders'), we've created 4 popular styles and highlighted the plants suitable. Each component has the style icons visible for the Planting Style it can be used for. Or ignore the icons to create your own style...

Soil Type icons

Your garden's soil can affect your plant's success, so it's important to select the correct soil type. All plants have an Icon to show their suitablity for Loam, Sandy or Clay soil. Find out which type you have by taking a piece of soil the size of a golf ball (removing any stones) and roll into a 'worm' shape...

Loam soilLoam soil types will be crushed easily in the palm of your hand...
Sandy soilClay soil types form this shape easily and when rubbed turn shiny...
Clay soilSandy soil types will not form this shape, they simply fall apart...

Sunlight Type icons

Your garden's sunlight can affect your plant's success, so it's important to select the correct sunlight type. All plants have an Icon to show their suitablity for Full Sun, Part Sun/Part Shade or Full Shade...

Full sun For borders in your garden that normally receive Full sunlight for the majority of the day - this is usually true for south-facing situations...

Sun/shade Part Sun and Part Shade borders get full sunlight for half the day or dappled sunlight all day - usually true for east/west facing situations...

Shade For borders that are normally in Full shade, receiving little sunlight for the majority of the day. This is usually true for north-facing situations...

Approx mature plant size

To help you select planting based on the available space you have in your border, each components details include approximate measurements (in metres) for the space the component occupies, where 'hi' = height, 'spread' = spread! in Metres. (Tree components are modelled at approx 10 years maturity) Eg;

'Approx size = 1.6hi x 2.8spread' - mature plant is 1.6 metres high with 2.8 metres spread.
