Soil Type icons
Your garden's soil can affect your plant's success, so it's important to select the correct soil type. All plants have an Icon to show their suitablity for Loam, Sandy or Clay soil. Find out which type you have by taking a piece of soil the size of a golf ball (removing any stones) and roll into a 'worm' shape...
Loam soil types will be crushed easily in the palm of your hand...
Clay soil types form this shape easily and when rubbed turn shiny...
Sandy soil types will not form this shape, they simply fall apart...
Sunlight Type icons
Your garden's sunlight can affect your plant's success, so it's important to select the correct sunlight type. All plants have an Icon to show their suitablity for Full Sun, Part Sun/Part Shade or Full Shade...
For borders in your garden that normally receive Full sunlight for the majority of the day - this is usually true for south-facing situations...
Part Sun and Part Shade borders get full sunlight for half the day or dappled sunlight all day - usually true for east/west facing situations...
For borders that are normally in Full shade, receiving little sunlight for the majority of the day. This is usually true for north-facing situations...
Approx mature plant size
To help you select planting based on the available space you have in your border, each components details include approximate measurements (in metres) for the space the component occupies, where 'hi' = height, 'spread' = spread! in Metres. (Tree components are modelled at approx 10 years maturity) Eg;
'Approx size = 1.6hi x 2.8spread' - mature plant is 1.6 metres high with 2.8 metres spread.
